WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University baseball team locked horns with Washington & Jefferson on Friday in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) battle. For five innings, the two defenses kept scoring to a minimum, but the Presidents broke through in the sixth and seventh frames to score the deciding runs in a 4-1 W&J win.
 
The Yellow Jackets (16-11, 6-7) struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Senior second baseman 
Corey Goeggelman reached first base after being hit by a pitch and two batters later, junior first baseman 
Bobby Hartman picked up his team-leading 30
th RBI on a clutch two-out triple that put the visiting team up 1-0.
 
Unfortunately, that was the last lead Waynesburg enjoyed as the Presidents (17-4, 8-2) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning before taking the lead (2-1) with a run in the bottom of the sixth. W&J tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to bring up the final score of 4-1. Despite posting seven hits, the Jackets managed to put just one runner in scoring position after Hartman's triple.
 
Seven different Waynesburg hitters notched a hit each in the loss, including senior catcher 
Brendan Scioscia, who connected on his team-leading 10
th double of the year. Senior pitcher 
Ben Oviatt got the start on the mound for Waynesburg and took the loss after working all nine innings and yielding three earned runs on nine hits and a walk. Oviatt (7-2) picked up three strikeouts for the day.
 
The same two teams will meet up tomorrow at Waynesburg's home field for a seven-inning PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
