WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 14) - The Waynesburg University baseball team lost both games of a home doubleheader on Saturday to Washington & Jefferson by the score of 5-3 and 5-1.
With the sweep, W&J improved to 19-3 overall and 10-2 in PAC play.  Waynesburg drops to16-13 overall and 6-9 in PAC action. Saturday's sweep gave all three of this season's meetings to the Presidents and caused the Jackets to suffer through their first season sweep of the year.
In game one, both teams went scoreless through three innings, with W&J getting on the scoreboard first, thanks to a RBI sacrifice-fly by President left fielder Brian Szabo. Waynesburg answered with a run of their own in the bottom of fifth, as senior left-fielder
Nick Berdine went deep to left-center field for his second home run of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
The Presidents moved ahead 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning to put the pressure on the Jackets, who responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. A sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Brian Hartman and an RBI single by Berdine accounted for the two Waynesburg runs.
The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning, with Jacket starting pitcher
Zach Kreke still working on the mound for the Jackets. Unfortunately, Waynesburg couldn't push any more runs across the plate and the Presidents put the game away by scoring two in the top of the eighth to take game one.
Kreke tossed eight strong innings, allowing just three earned runs on six hits while walking two batters.
Berdine led the Jackets offense, going two-for-three with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.
Game two featured nine Waynesburg walks, which assisted the Presidents, who recorded just two base hits, but scored five runs in the late-game victory.
Senior pitcher
Rob Baumgartel pitched into the sixth inning for Waynesburg. Baumgartel struck out one and gave up five runs off two hits, four walks, two hit batsmen and three wild pitches before being pulled in the sixth. Freshman
Sean Boyle  and senior
Tim Chilcote combined to finish up the game in relief. Chilcote retired four-of-the-five batters he faced.
The Jackets scored their lone run of the game in the seventh inning, when senior shortstop
Kyle Sasala grounded out to score  freshman
Ben Shorthouse from third base. Sasala finished the game two-for-four at the plate with the aforementioned RBI. Freshman second baseman
Joseph Smith went two-for-two with a double.
The Jackets return to action on Thursday, when they host Grove City for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
