Box Score
GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 25) – The Waynesburg University baseball team scored a crucial Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win on Wednesday when the Yellow Jackets defeated Grove City 8-3. With the win, the Jackets remained in fifth place in the race for one of four spots in the PAC championship tournament.
With the win, the Jackets (20-14, 9-9) completed a three-game season sweep of the Wolverines (5-25, 3-15). It was Waynesburg's first PAC season sweep since 2009 (Bethany). Though Waynesburg eventually took the win, Grove City was able to strike first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. However, the home team's lead was short-lived thanks to a big top of the third that gave the visitors a lead they never relinquished.
Senior centerfielder
Mike Neckerman walked, junior shortstop
Kyle Sasala singled and senior third baseman laid down a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Senior catcher
Brendan Scioscia patiently drew a walk to plate his team's first run of the game and tie the score at 1-1. After giving up its first out of the half-inning, senior leftfielder
Nick Berdine gave Waynesburg the lead with a two-run single that pushed the visiting team ahead 3-1. A double play ended the Jackets' half of the third, but they were far from done at the plate.
Waynesburg's lead grew to 4-1 thanks to an RBI single by Sasala in the fourth, and a two-run homer by senior designated hitter
Tim Chilcote in the top of the fifth made the score 6-1 in favor of the Jackets. The visitors maintained a five-run advantage until the top of the eighth when Scioscia and junior first baseman
Bobby Hartman collected back-to-back RBI singles to push Waynesburg's lead to 8-1. Grove City managed to pick up a run in the eighth inning and one more in the ninth to bring about the final score of 8-3.
The Jackets out-hit their opponents 14-to-11 on the day, with three of those base knocks coming from Sasala, who paced Waynesburg with a three-for-five showing that included an RBI and two runs scored. Scioscia, Berdine and Chilcote all drove in two runs each, while Neckerman joined Sasala with two runs scored.
Kreke picked up the win on the mound, despite only working two innings into the start. He gave up one run on three hits and no walks during the short day's work and was the first of five pitchers used by head coach
Mike Humiston.
Waynesburg will go for its fourth-straight PAC win on Friday, April 27, when the Jackets return home to host Geneva for a nine-inning matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
