Box Score
GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 5) – The Waynesburg University baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday when it dropped a 7-3 decision at Thiel.
The Yellow Jackets (14-8, 5-5) staked a 1-0 lead over the Tomcats (10-12, 3-4) when junior shortstop
Kyle Sasala teed off on his second homerun of the season in the top of the first inning. Unfortunately, that was the team's last lead of the day as Thiel posted two runs in the bottom of the opening inning and increased its lead to 7-1 with four runs in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth.
The Jackets tried to get back into the contest with two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout by senior leftfielder
Nick Berdine and a run-scoring single by senior third baseman
Tim Chilcote to bring up the eventual final score of 7-3. The visitors proceeded to load the bases with two outs in the frame, but the Tomcats slipped out of trouble. Waynesburg managed just one base runner on an error over the final three innings of play.
Junior
Anthony Longo started on the mound for the Jackets and suffered the loss after giving up six runs, all earned, on six hits and three walks over three innings of work. Freshman pitcher
Sean Boyle did his best to keep Waynesburg in contention against the Tomcats by giving up just one run on two hits and a walk over the final five innings of play.
Senior catcher
Brendan Scioscia led the Waynesburg offense with two of its five hits and a run scored.
The Jackets and Tomcats will meet back up on Saturday for a seven-inning doubleheader in Waynesburg. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
