Women's soccer grits out overtime win

Abraham's header is the difference in 2-1 victory over Pitt-Greensburg

Box Score

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 4) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team improved to 2-0 under first-year head coach Carl Griffiths after pulling out a 2-1 overtime win against a much-improved Pitt-Greensburg team on Tuesday night.  Last year, the Bobcats went 0-14-2 with 11 shutouts. Even after suffering its most recent loss to the Yellow Jackets, UPG's record stood at 2-2 for the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Jackets got on the board first thanks to a goal by junior Susie Godwin, who tallied her first score of the season in the 47th minute of action after taking a feed from sophomore Kirsten Miller. Just over four minutes later, the home team tied the game up with an unassisted tally in the 51st minute. The game remained tied at 1-1 as regulation time ran out and the two teams went into overtime.

The two squads continued a tight battle in the extra period until the 97th minute, when sophomore Natalie Abraham headed a cross in front of the net that was set up by freshman Karleigh Murphy and sophomore Emily Mullady. The game-winner was Abraham's team-leading third score of the 2012 campaign.

Freshman keeper Ciara Scott improved to 2-0 in net after playing all 90 minutes of the hard-fought victory. Even though the final score didn't reflect it, Waynesburg held a massive advantage in shots (25-to-four), including a 17-2 edge in the second period.

The Jackets will look to go to 3-0 in 2012 on Friday, Sept. 7, when they go back on the road to take on Oberlin. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
