WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 16) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team welcomed Saint Vincent College to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a clash of two of the three teams tied for second place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) with 6-2 conference records. Unfortunately, after 40 minutes of play, the Yellow Jackets fell out of that three-way tie after losing 72-54 to the Bearcats on Wednesday night.
The Cats (11-5, 7-2) got things started by scoring the first nine point of the game over the opening 2:25 of play. Waynesburg (7-9, 6-3) finally ended the surge when junior
Elaine Hasek posted the Yellow Jackets' first points on the night after nearly four scoreless minutes of play. That hoop began a 10-5 run by the home team that pulled it to within four points (14-10) with 11:31 showing on the first half clock.
From that point on, the rest of the opening period was a hotly contested stretch of play that saw the host team trim SVC's lead down to a single point on multiple occasions. When the first 20 minutes of competition came to a close, the Bearcats led just 29-27, thanks to a last-second layup by Waynesburg senior guard
Brittany Spencer, who wound up having a historic night on the court.
The Jackets tied the game up for the first time since 0-0 when freshman point guard
Gina Rievel dropped in the first basket of the second half to tie the score 29-29. A pair of Saint Vincent free throws gave the lead back to the visiting team at 31-29. They also started an 8-1 Bearcat run that gave them a 37-30 lead with just under 16 minutes left to play in the contest.
Waynesburg was never able to recover from the SVC run and wound up trailing by as many as 20 points, before eventually taking the 18-point victory. It was the second-straight victory for the Bearcats over the Jackets, following a Waynesburg sweep of both of last year's regular season meetings.
The Jackets were led by Spencer, who eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark with a team-high 18 points. The Baltimore native ended the night with 1,003 career markers. She also tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Senior forward
Paige Pearce chipped in 10 points to the losing effort, while Hasek went for nine on the night.
Saint Vincent held a sizeable advantage from three-point range that played a big role in its road win. The Green and Yellow connected on five-of-15 tries from long range, while the Jackets managed just one make from downtown on 14 attempts.
After seeing a four-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night, the Jackets will look to start a new run of success on Saturday, Jan.19, when Bethany comes to town for a PAC clash. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
