WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 5) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team won its second straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on Saturday by taking down Westminster 57-51 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Yellow Jackets (5-8, 4-2) featured three players putting up 11 points each in a balanced scoring effort. Senior forward
Paige Pearce, senior guard
Jessi Drayer and freshman guard
Lauren Blair made up the trio of double-digit scorers that led the home team to its first victory of the year at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Points were hard to come by in the opening portion of the PAC clash, as neither team was able to find the bottom of the net until 3:32 into the contest, when Drayer knocked down a three-pointer to put her team up 3-0. That shot was the beginning of a 7-2 game-opening run for Waynesburg that put Westminster (5-8, 3-3) in an early hole. However, the Titans responded with a 6-2 spurt of their own to trim the deficit down to just one (9-8) with 12:42 remaining in the first half.
The Jackets led for the remainder of the first half, but weren't able to pull further away than five points from their opposition. Waynesburg held a 29-26 edge as the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms after the first period drew to a close.
Westminster cut its disadvantage down just one (29-28) by recording the first basket of the second half, before the Jackets came back with three free throws in four attempts to rebuild a multi-score edge at 32-28. The home team continued to maintain leads as large as six points throughout the remainder of the contest, but with 21 seconds left to play, the Jackets' advantage was just two points and Westminster seemed poised to either tie the game up, or pull out a win.
However, with just 11 seconds showing on the game clock, senior guard
Brittany Spencer came up with a huge steal and was fouled to stop the clock. The Baltimore, Md. native knocked down a pair of free throws that made the score 55-51 Waynesburg. Seconds later, Spencer grabbed the rebound on the second of two missed Titan foul shots and with two seconds left in the contest, she was spent back to the stripe, where she iced the game for the Jackets with two more successful attempts.
Spencer's four-straight conversions from the foul line were the biggest of 14 made free throws on 19 attempts in the second half for Waynesburg. Most of the statistical categories featured small differentials between the two teams, although the Jackets out-shot the Titans 36 percent to 29 percent on the evening.
Waynesburg will go for its third-straight conference victory on Wednesday, Jan. 9, when the Jackets host Thiel for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
