Box Score

YORK, Pa. (Nov. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team tipped off the 2013-14 season on Friday night at the York (Pa.) College Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The Yellow Jackets opened up the two-day event by squaring off with Bridgewater (Va.) College and dropped a 77-64 decision to the Eagles.

The Yellow Jackets (0-1) opened the season by scoring the game's first four points on layups by senior Elaine Hasek and sophomore Maura Bobby. Waynesburg's lead grew to six points (8-2) after back-to-back hoops from sophomore Heather Davis early in the first half. Unfortunately, Bridgewater (1-0) scored the next eight points to grab a 10-8 advantage, before the Jackets tied things up at 10-10 with 13 minutes remaining in the opening period.

Neither team was able to fully gain control of the contest throughout the remainder of the first half. However, an 8-0 Eagle run turned a slight 27-25 edge into a 35-25 lead with 2:23 remaining until halftime. Bridgewater maintained a multi-basket lead (38-31) until the two opponents broke for their respective locker rooms.

The Eagles slowly began pulling away from the Jackets over the opening minutes of period number two and built several double-digit leads over the first 10 minutes of action. However, Waynesburg fired back and pulled to within five points (60-55) with 9:06 left in regulation. Unfortunately, with 4:54 showing on the clock and the Jackets trailing 68-61, Bridgewater put together a 6-0 run over the next minute to pull ahead 74-61 and effectively put the game out of reach.

Davis paced the Waynesburg offense by scoring a team-high 17 points over 30 minutes of play. She also yanked down a team-high nine rebounds. Both Bobby and sophomore Brooke Simons chipped in nine points each, while Hasek and Simons chipped in eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

The Orange and Black will try to even up its record tomorrow, when it squares off with Pitt Bradford during day two of the event. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
