Women's basketball takes part in M-Club Shootout

Yellow Jackets fall to host Purple Raiders

Box Score

ALLIANCE, Ohio (Nov. 22) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hit the road for its second early-season tournament of the season on Friday. The Yellow Jackets traveled to Alliance, Ohio, to take part in the University of Mount Union M-Club Shootout, and faced off with the host Purple Raiders. Waynesburg suffered a 104-66 loss to a traditionally strong Mount Union program.

The Raiders (3-0) jumped out to a 9-0 lead before sophomore Maura Bobby dropped in a layup for the first Jacket (0-3) points of the night. Waynesburg stayed competitive for most of the first half and trailed by just three points (26-23) after senior forward Elaine Hasek knocked down a pair of free throws with 6:27 left to play until halftime. The host squad regained firm control of its opposition as the first 20 minutes came to an end, and went to the locker room with a 50-35 advantage.

The Purple Raiders opened the second period with a 12-2 run that stretched their lead to 62-37 with 16:15 remaining in the contest. They never looked back on their way to the 38-point victory.

Hasek put together a solid night's work to pace the Jackets. The Mars, Pa. native poured in a game-high 18 points and completed her first double-double of the season with a contest-best 10 rebounds. Bobby added 13 points on the night, while junior forward Rachel Lovely chipped in 11 off the bench.

Mount Union held a big advantage in terms of field goal shooting that ultimately led to its victory. The Purple Raiders knocked down 52 percent of their tries from the floor (35-of-67), while Waynesburg made 15-of-56 attempts (26.8 percent). The Jackets were able to soften some of the blow by drilling an impressive 31-of-41 free throws, as compared to the Raiders' 19-of-28 night at the charity stripe.

Waynesburg's two-day run at the shootout continues tomorrow with a 3 p.m. showdown against Denison University (3-1). The Big Red fell 75-70 to Hanover.
