Box Score
BROCKPORT, N.Y. (Nov. 23) – The Waynesburg University football team played in its third-straight Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) bowl game on Saturday, when it traveled to the College at Brockport to face the Eagles in the ECAC North West Bowl. The Yellow Jackets fell behind early, but had a chance to win on the final possession of the game. Waynesburg came up 60 yards shy of a touchdown as time expired in a 19-12 loss.
Brockport (8-3) wasted little time in grabbing a lead in front of their home crowd. The Green and Yellow scored on an 82-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game. A missed extra point kept Waynesburg's (7-4) deficit at 6-0 following just 46 seconds of action.
The Jackets fired right back with a 12-play, 66-yard drive that concluded with senior kicker
Alex Henry connecting on a 25-yard field goal to halve the Brockport advantage. Waynesburg had a first-and-10 situation at the Eagle 11-yard line, but wound up settling for three points.
The two defenses controlled play for the remainder of the first half, but Brockport's special teams made a huge impact with a 40-yard punt return for a touchdown with 5:26 showing on the second-half clock. The Eagles' first-and-only successful PAT try of the day put the home team ahead 13-3.
The two defenses continued to control play in the third quarter, before Waynesburg marched 50 yards on 14 plays to set Henry up for his second successful field goal of the afternoon. The 22-yard make not only reduced the Jackets' deficit to just seven points (13-6), but it gave Henry his 13
th made field goal of the season, which tied the program's single-season record (Bryan Arbes, 2008).
The Golden Eagles posted their final six points of the day late in the fourth quarter, but Waynesburg senior
Marvin Sampson blocked the extra point attempt after a block from fellow senior
Brandon Fedorka was wiped out by a penalty to make the score 19-6. The Yellow Jackets stayed in the game with their only touchdown of the day, which came at the end of a 17-play, 75-yard marathon drive. Junior quarterback
Carter Hill collected his school-record 28
th touchdown of the year when he fired in an eight-yard pass to junior wide receiver
Bernie Thompson to bring about the eventual final score of 19-12.
Waynesburg went for the onside kick and appeared to recover the ball, but a penalty flag gave the ball back to Brockport. The Eagles were unable to run out the final 1:38 of play, and the Jackets had one last shot at victory. Waynesburg took possession at its own 25-yard line off a punt with 32 seconds remaining in the contest. A pass interference penalty gave the Jackets 15 free yards, but four-straight incompletions allowed the home team to regain possession and run out the rest of the clock.
Hill became the first Waynesburg quarterback to eclipse 3,000 yards in a season (3,102) after completing 19-of-48 pass attempts for 219 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Senior tight end
