WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 21) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team continued through a brutal early portion to its 2013-14 schedule on Saturday, when it hosted Baldwin Wallace at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. After falling behind 37-23 at halftime, the Orange and Black bounced back by out-scoring its opposition 39-37 in the second period to bring about the final score of 74-62.
The host Yellow Jackets (3-6) began their strong final 20 minutes of play with a three-pointer from junior
Hayden Giuliani to make the score 37-26 in favor of Baldwin Wallace (8-2). BW maintained double-digit leads until the 12:27 mark of the second half, when the home team took off on a 12-4 run that closed the deficit to just two points.
Giuliani got things going with another three-pointer that made the score 46-39 with 12:16 showing on the clock. Senior
Elaine Hasek followed with a trey of her own that pulled her team within four points of the opposition. A pair of Baldwin Wallace free throws pushed its lead back up to six, but sophomore
Lauren Blair got in on the long range assault with a three-pointer that cut Waynesburg's deficit down to a single basket at 48-45 with just under 11 minutes to play.
BW again responded to the Orange and Black charge with a pair of free throws, but a layup from freshman forward
Courtney Sargent and a free throw from Blair made the score 50-48 Baldwin Wallace with nine minutes remaining in the contest. Unfortunately, a 10-0 surge for the opposition over the next four minutes pushed its lead back up to 12 points (60-48) with 4:48 showing on the second-half clock. Waynesburg was able to pull back to within eight points of its opposition, but a slew of BW free throws down the stretch of the contest closed out the victory.
Giuliani led the home team with a team-high 16 points on an impressive six-of-seven shooting from the field, including a perfect four-for-four performance from three-point range. Junior guard
Rebecca Kerr chipped in 11 points, while Blair added 10. Freshman forward
Courtney Sargent come off the bench to put up nine points and pull down a game-high 12 rebounds over 20 minutes. Hasek added 10 rebounds, all in the second half, to go along with six points.
Waynesburg out-performed Baldwin Wallace from three-point range by hitting on eight-of-20 tries from long range. BW connected on just three-of-14 attempts from downtown. The visitors ultimately won the contest through its work from the free throw line after making 29-of-43 foul shots. The home squad took just 22 attempts from the charity stripe, and made 14 of them.
The Yellow Jackets are off until 2014, when they return to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a road trip to Grove City. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
