WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 16) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team honored its four seniors at halftime of Saturday's regular season finale against Chatham University. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Cougars 77-40 to complete a 13-12 schedule and a 12-6 campaign in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
Waynesburg built up a 40-16 halftime lead, before out-scoring the Cougars (3-22, 2-16) 37-24 in the second period. Chatham trailed by just five (19-14) with 8:53 remaining in the first half, but a 21-2 Jacket run to end the opening period put the home team in control of the contest.
Waynesburg was led by one of its senior honorees, guard
Brittany Spencer, who picked up her fifth double-double of the season on 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard
Gina Rievel poured in a game-high 13 points for the Jackets, while another freshman guard,
Lauren Blair, chipped in 11. Senior guard
Jessi Drayer dished out four of the Jackets' 20 assists.
Not surprisingly, Waynesburg held sizeable advantages in most statistical categories, including assists (20-to-seven), turnovers (30-to-15) and three-point shooting (50 percent to 12.5 percent).
With the regular season concluded, the Jackets turn their attention to winning the 2013 PAC title as the conference tournament tips off on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Waynesburg, who is the fourth seed for the event, plays host to fifth-seeded Westminster. The Yellow Jackets swept the season series with the Titans by the final sores of 57-51 and 70-61. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
