Mens tennis tangles with Penn State Altoona

Yellow Jackets drop 7-2 contest with Lions

Match Results

ALTOONA, Pa. (March 23) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team traveled to Penn State Altoona on Saturday to face the Lions. Despite the 7-2 final score, the Yellow Jackets gave Altoona a spirited match with several tightly contested contests.

Altoona (2-2), got off to a strong start by sweeping the three doubles matches, but The Jackets (3-2) didn't make it easy. Seniors Jon Anderson and Corey Rearick took their number-two doubles match right down to the wire, before dropping a disappointing 9-7 final score.

Moving to singles play, sophomore first singles player Isaiah Cochran took the opening set of his match with Kevin Bartkus 6-2. However, Bartkus rebounded to grab the final two sets 6-1, 6-1 to take the victory. Waynesburg bounced back with wins at second and third singles, which came courtesy of sophomore Philip Littlejohn and Anderson. Littlejohn took his match at the number-two spot in straight sets (6-4, 6-2), and Anderson did the same at the third flight (7-6, 6-2).

Rearick had a chance to make it three wins in a row at the number-four singles spot where Rearick battled Chao Hsuan Liu. After the two competitors split the first two sets, Liu slipped by his opponent 11-9 in the third set to score the victory and clinch the match for the home team.

Altoona was aided on the day by a pair of default wins, one in singles play, the other in doubles competition. Waynesburg is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 26, when the Jackets host Bethany for their first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match of the season. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
