BETHANY, W.Va. (March 30) – The Waynesburg University baseball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contests at Bethany College on Saturday. After the Bison took the opener 11-4, the Yellow Jackets rebounded with a 9-2 triumph in game two to not only salvage the split, but also win the season series 2-1.

Thing started well for the Jackets (9-6, 2-1) in game one, as senior first baseman Bobby Hartman plated the game's first run by doubling in junior centerfielder Clay Roman in the top of the first inning to stake his team to an early 1-0 lead. The Bison (3-8, 1-5) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning, but senior leftfielder Nick Berdine grabbed the lead right back for the visiting team by teeing off on his team-leading fourth home run of the season to put Waynesburg ahead 2-1.

Bethany took its first lead (3-2) with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, before the Jackets regained momentum with a two-spot of their own in the top of the fifth. Berdine picked up his second RBI of the game when he doubled in senior shortstop Kyle Sasala to tie the game at 3-3. Hartman proceeded to drive in Berdine during the ensuing at-bat to give Waynesburg its final lead of the opener at 4-3. The Green and White put the game away with three runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to seal up the victory.

Berdine, Hartman and senior second baseman David Houseman recorded two hits each, to account for six of the team's nine total hits. Berdine and Hartman drove in a team-high two runs each, while Berdine scored twice.

Senior Anthony Longo started and took the loss on the mound for the Jackets. The veteran righty worked 4.1 innings and yielded six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits and a walk. Longo struck out one Bison in defeat.

For the third-straight time this season, Waynesburg struck first against the Bison in the late game of the twin-bill. The Jackets were able to take advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the first inning, when senior third baseman Tim Chilcote grounded out for a productive out that scored Sasala. Waynesburg doubled its advantage to 2-0 when Roman came into score on a wild pitch.

The home team came back with a two-spot of its own in the third inning, but those were the last runs that Bethany could muster on the day, while the Jacket bats had no plans to cool off. Waynesburg did most of its damage in the fifth inning, when it put together a five-running frame that made the score 7-2 in favor of the Orange and Black.

After back-to-back-to-back singles loaded the bases up with no outs on the board, sophomore designated hitter Ben Shorthouse lifted a sacrifice fly ball to left field that put the Jackets up 3-2. Another sacrifice fly by junior catcher Marc Timmons made it 4-2 Jackets and a balk allowed Chilcote to trot home and put his team up 5-2. Two batters later, Sasala delivered the big hit of the inning by singling in Houseman and senior right fielder Adam Horning to stake the visitors to a five-run lead.

Waynesburg sealed up the win with two more scores in the top of the sixth. With Hartman standing on second base and one out on the board, Shorthouse connected on a run-scoring triple that pushed the Jackets' advantage to 8-2.Shorthouse later trotted home on another balk to bring about the final score of 9-2.

Houseman and Roman paced Waynesburg's offense by both going three-for-four at the plate with a run scored in the win. Sasala added two hits in five trips to the dish with a run scored and two RBI. The Jacket offense helped offset three errors by out-hitting the Bison by a 13-to-four margin.

Freshman Brian Resnik improved to 3-0 on the year with a complete-game win. The Burgettstown, Pa. native didn't allow an earned run, walked just one hitter and struck out six Bison to drop his team-best ERA to 2.10.

The Jackets return to action on Tuesday, April 2, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a seven-inning doubleheader against the Presidents. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
