Jacket men of the diamond travel to Saint Vincent

Waynesburg takes early lead, but falls 7-4 to Bearcats

Box Score

LATROBE, Pa. (April 5) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hit the road on Friday to begin a three-game Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) weekend series with Saint Vincent College. The Yellow Jackets built an early lead in the nine-inning matchup, but the Bearcats bounced back to pick up the win 7-4.

The Jackets (9-9, 2-4) fired right out of the gate in the top of the first inning, as senior shortstop Kyle Sasala drilled a leadoff triple to immediately put pressure on the Cats (8-7, 5-1). Two batters later, senior left fielder Nick Berdine brought Sasala in to score the game's first run with a sacrifice fly.

SVC answered with two runs in the bottom of the first off Waynesburg starter Brian Resnik to grab a 2-1 advantage, but the Jackets were ready to respond in the top of the second. After junior catcher Marc Timmons was hit by a pitch with one out on the board, senior right fielder Adam Horning teed off on his second homerun of the season to re-establish a one-run lead (3-2) for the Jackets.

Unfortunately, Horning's big blast gave Waynesburg its final lead of the game. Saint Vincent scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, two more in the fifth and its final tally in the bottom of the sixth to build up a 7-3 advantage.

To the Jackets' credit, Waynesburg didn't give up on a comeback until the final out was in the books. With two outs on the board, Sasala and junior centerfielder Clay Roman connected on back-to-back singles to put two runners on the base pads. Berdine picked up RBI number 24 of 2013 with a single and brought the potential game-tying run to the plate in the form of senior first baseman Bobby Hartman. Unfortunately, Hartman grounded out to first base to end the rally.

Sasala, Berdine and Horning all went two-for-four at the plate for Waynesburg. The two senior Jacket outfielders drove in two runs each, while Sasala scored a team-high two runs.

Freshman Brian Resnik started and suffered his first loss of the season on the mound after giving up six runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits and a walk over five innings of work. The Jacket rookie struck out four batters for the afternoon before turning the ball over to another Waynesburg newcomer in freshman Aaron Gardocki. Gardocki gave up just one unearned run over three innings on one hit and two walks, while striking out two Bearcats.

The Yellow Jackets will look to salvage a series win against the Bearcats tomorrow, when Saint Vincent travels to Waynesburg for a seven-inning doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
