WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 18) – Four players scored in double figures as the Waynesburg University women's basketball team rolled to a 92-54 victory over Chatham on Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
The Yellow Jackets (8-7, 6-2) took control early in the contest and earned their fifth win over the past six games. Senior forward
Elaine Hasek recorded an old fashioned three-point play during a 7-0 Yellow Jacket run that turned a 7-7 tie into a 14-7 lead at the 14:25 mark of the first half. The lead grew to double figures (21-11) when freshman
Haley Delaney knocked down a three-pointer with 11:53 showing on the first-period clock.
Waynesburg's run grew to 17-0 when junior
Rebecca Kerr pushed her team's advantage to 31-11 with a layup with 9:25 to play in the half. Waynesburg carried its hot-shooting from the field throughout the rest of the half and pushed its lead to 26 points (50-24) at the halftime break. The home team continued to put together its best offensive effort of the season and saw its lead swell to as many as 39 points at the 4:03 mark of period number two.
The victory was a complete-team effort for the Jackets, as 13 players registered at least one point on the day. Delaney was one of four Jackets in double figures, and poured in a team-high 14 points. Kerr and Hasek both totaled 11 points, while sophomore
Brooke Simons finished with 10 points.
Waynesburg held a 56-to-36 rebounding advantage, despite having not having a player finish with more than six rebounds. The Yellow Jackets did a nice job of sharing the ball on offense, recording a season-high 18 assists. Kerr, sophomore
Lauren Blair and freshman
Katie Gehlmann each dished out four assists. The Waynesburg defense limited Chatham (2-13, 1-7) to 31 percent shooting from the field and forced the Cougars into 26 turnovers.
Waynesburg returns to action with a trip to second-place Saint Vincent College on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
