Women's basketball travels to Saint Vincent

Yellow Jackets fall 98-82 to Bearcats

Box Score

LATROBE, Pa. (Jan. 22) – Senior forward Elaine Hasek earned her sixth double-double of the season after posting 16 points and pulling down 13 rebounds as the Waynesburg University women's basketball team dropped a 98-82 loss Wednesday night at Saint Vincent.

The Bearcats (11-5, 8-1) built an early advantage and held it for the entirety of the contest as they defeated the Yellow Jackets (8-8, 6-3) for a fourth-straight meeting. Saint Vincent jumped out to early leads of 11-2 and 15-5 over the course of the first five minutes of the contest. The lead hovered around double digits until the Jackets scored nine consecutive points to cut the deficit to 21-17 at the 9:18 mark.

Freshman Katie Gehlmann completed a three-point play, before junior Hayden Giuliani scored four-straight points during the run. That scoring surge kept the Jackets within striking distance of their opposition over the remainder of the half as they kept the deficit to single digits before Saint Vincent settled in for a 43-37 halftime advantage.

Sophomore Lauren Blair knocked down a three-point field goal to start the second half to cut her team's deficit to three points at 43-40. Unfortunately, what was as close as the Jackets came to completing the comeback. The Bearcats took off on a 23-to-seven run over the next eight minutes to stretch their lead to 66-47. The home team built leads as large as 24 points on several occasions over the remainder of the second half. Waynesburg battled to the end, scoring 10 consecutive points late in the second half to cut the score to 85-71 before completing its evening.

Giuliani (15), Blair (15) and Gehlmann (13) each joined Hasek in double figures in scoring. The Bearcats held a sizeable advantage from the field, outshooting the Jackets 48 percent to 31 percent. Both teams found their share of success from three-point range as they combined for 16 made three-pointers.

The contest was a foul-filled one, as the teams combined for total 57 fouls and 71 free throws. Waynesburg held a slight 55-50 rebounding advantage in the defeat.

Waynesburg will start the second half of its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule with a trip to Bethany College on Saturday to face the host Bison. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
