BETHANY, W.Va. (Jan. 25) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball used a strong defensive effort to earn a 62-40 road victory Saturday afternoon at Bethany College. It was the Yellow Jackets' sixth-straight win against the rival Bison.
Waynesburg (9-8, 7-3) started off slowly on the offensive side of the ball, but eventually gained the lead for good when senior forward
Elaine Hasek connected on a three-point field goal to make it 14-12 at the 7:41 mark of the first half.
Back-to-back three-point field goals by sophomore
Heather Davis pushed the lead into double digits (24-13) with just under four minutes to play in the half. Junior
Rebecca Kerr finished off the opening period with a jumper to beat the buzzer and give the Jackets a 26-15 advantage. The Yellow Jackets maintained their double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest and kept the Bison at bay on their way to the victory.
After not attempting a free throw in the first half, the Jackets made 11-of-13 from the charity stripe after the break. That effort played a big role in the Jackets' ability to pull away for the win. Waynesburg also found success from beyond the three-point arc, draining seven three-point field goals in the game, including three from Davis.
Davis led a balanced offensive attack with 11 points, while Hasek added 10 points. Davis also led the Jackets in rebounds with eight. Hasek and junior
Hayden Giuliani both pulled down seven rebounds for the Jackets. A total of 11 players scored for Waynesburg on the day.
The Jacket defense limited Bethany to just 14 makes on 57 shot attempts from the field (24.6 percent). The Bison struggled from three-point range as well, making just four of 20 from beyond the arc (20 percent). The teams combined for 45 turnovers in the contest as the Jackets swept the regular season series for the third consecutive year.
The Yellow Jackets host back-to-back home games during the upcoming week. The first of those contests will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when Waynesburg hosts Grove City. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
