GROVE CITY, Pa. (Jan. 3) – Four players scored in double figures as the Waynesburg University women's basketball team pulled away in the second half for an 85-73 victory at Grove City College Friday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets' top offensive showing of the season helped them to improve to 2-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play and 4-6 overall. Meanwhile, host Grove City dropped to 0-3 in the PAC and 1-8 overall.
Waynesburg tallied the first points of the game when senior forward
Elaine Hasek hit a layup with 18:42 to play in the first half. Both teams grabbed leads as large as five points respectively before playing to a 29-29 tie with 3:27 to play in a back-and-forth first half of action. The visiting team began their run to victory by ending the half on a 13-to-seven run to gain a 42-36 advantage after 20 minutes of play.
Junior forward
Rachel Lovely made two free throws to push the Jackets' lead to eight points (44-36) as period number two got going. However, Grove City fought back to cut the Waynesburg lead to just a single point at 49-48 with 15:23 to play.
The Wolverines eventually lost their momentum before regaining the lead. Waynesburg ripped off a 10-to-two run to strengthen its lead to 59-50 after a basket from freshman forward
Courtney Sargent at the 11:44 mark. Grove City answered with five consecutive points, but the Orange and Black responded with a three-point basket from sophomore
Heather Davis and a layup by Sargent to push the lead back to nine points (66-57) at the 8:19 mark of the second half.
Grove City made one last run at victory and was able to cut the Jacket lead to as few as five points on multiple occasions, before Waynesburg melted the final moments of the game away to claim victory.
Senior forward
Elaine Hasek scored 18 points, pulled down six rebounds and chipped in three assists to lead her team to victory. Davis also totaled 18 points for the Orange and Black, and both players drained four three-point field goals apiece. Sophomore point guard
