Women's basketball takes 64-42 contest from Geneva

Waynesburg picks up second PAC win in as many days

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 4) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team overcame a slow start and coasted to a 64-42 victory over visiting Geneva College Saturday evening at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. It was the second Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win in as many days for the Yellow Jackets.
 
Things didn't start well for the Orange and Black (5-6, 3-1) as the undermanned Golden Tornadoes (0-4, 1-9) rattled off the first eight points of the contest. Waynesburg battled back by scoring the next six points, including a three-pointer by sophomore guard Lauren Blair. The Yellow Jackets continued their hot surge, and senior forward Elaine Hasek tied the game at 11-11 at the 11:15 mark.
 
Sophomore Heather Davis drained a three-point field goal to give the Jackets their first advantage at 14-11. Waynesburg continued to build on that lead and cranked up its defensive effort over the remainder of the half before taking a 30-16 lead into halftime.
 
The Yellow Jackets continued to build on their in the second half, and built leads as large as 28 points (59-31) with 7:42 to play. His team's comfortable advantage allowed head coach Sam Jones to clear his bench in a contest that saw 11 players tally at least one point each for the home team.
 
Hasek paced the Orange and Black attack with 11 points. Junior Hayden Giuliani added 11 points of her own, including three three-point field goals. Freshman forward Courtney Sargent continued to build a solid rookie campaign by adding 10 points and six rebounds to the winning effort. Davis poured in eight points and a game-high eight rebounds in just 14 minutes of play. Waynesburg held advantages in made field goals (22-to-13), free throws made (14-to-11), rebounds (52-to-30) and assists (13-to-six).
 
The Yellow Jackets look to make it three-straight conference wins when they host rival Washington and Jefferson on Wednesday night at the Marisa Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
