Jacket women defeat Bethany 4-1

Waynesburg breaks up 1-1 tie with three second-half goals

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 14) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team broke up a 1-1 tie with three second-half goals en route to a 4-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over visiting Bethany College.

The Yellow Jackets (6-6-2, 2-2-0) actually picked up their first point of the night thanks to an own goal from the Bison (3-10, 0-4) just before the 18-minute mark of the first half. Bethany tied the game 1-1 just over a minute later, but that was the last time the visiting squad was able to find the back of the net.

Waynesburg took control of the game early in the second half when junior Karleigh Murphey received a pass from senior Taylor Bombalski and put the home team back in the lead at 2-1 during the 48th minute of play. Senior Becky Hotek doubled the Jacket advantage to 3-1 less than six minutes later on a goal set up by Murphey.

The Jackets sealed up the win during the 81st minute of play when sophomore Chelsey Withers assisted on a Sara Hackman tally that brought about the final score. The last goal of the night came as part of a 26-shot barrage from the Jackets, 16 of those attempts wound up on net. Waynesburg also dominated the corner kicks, attempting 12 of them while the visitors took just a single try from the corner.

Junior Ciara Scott started in goal for Waynesburg and got the win after 90 minutes of work. She was well protected by her defensive teammates, who allowed just three total shots by the Bison, two of which were on net.

The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they play host to Thomas More. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
