Women's soccer battles Westminster

Yellow Jackets jump out to early lead, but come up short against Titans

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 22) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead in Wednesday's game at Westminster and appeared poised to pick up a crucial win as it makes a push for the four-team Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs. Unfortunately, things took a downward turn in the second half, as the Titans erased their deficit and pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg (6-8-2, 2-4-0) got a potential upset bid off to a great start when freshman Nikki Davis scored an unassisted goal during the eighth minute of play. The Jackets doubled their advantage to 2-0 with 5:45 remaining in the opening period thanks to another unassisted score, this one coming from senior Erica Nordlund.

The visitors seemed to have all the momentum as the game went into the halftime break. Unfortunately, that stop in the action may have been exactly what Westminster (13-2-1, 6-0) needed to turn things around. The Titans got on the board during the 58th minute of play and added a crucial own goal from the Orange and Black less than 11 minutes later. Westminster fired home the game winner just over one minute later and held on for the victory.

The game's five goals were scored on just a combined 17 total shots, including 10 for Westminster. Junior Ciara Scott played all 90 minutes in net for Waynesburg and made six saves on the night.

The Jackets face another crucial PAC matchup on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they host Washington & Jefferson for the team's annual Kick Pancreatic Cancer game. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
