Women's soccer pulls off wild win at Geneva

Yellow Jackets grab 5-4 overtime victory

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Oct. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team found itself locked in a wild Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest at Geneva on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets and Golden Tornadoes battled through 90 minutes of regulation time and went into overtime before Waynesburg pulled out a 5-4 triumph.

Waynesburg (7-8-3, 3-4-1) freshman Nikki Davis scored the first of nine goals on the evening when she took a feed from senior Becky Hotek and fired the ball past the Geneva (2-15, 1-7) keeper at the 5:05 mark of the game. The upset-minded Golden Tornadoes responded with two tallies before halftime to end the first period with a 2-1 advantage.

The Jackets caught a break 12 minutes into the second half with an own goal that tied things up at 2-2. Geneva regained the lead at 3-2 just over three minutes later, before Hotek knotted the score at 3-3 following an assist from Davis.

The home team grabbed its final lead (4-3) of the contest during the 68th minute of action and appeared poised for victory as the game wore on past its 80th minute. Luckily for the visitors, Davis was up to the task yet again, as she recorded her second goal of the night at the 81:32 mark to tie the score at 4-4 and send the game into overtime.

The game's deciding point was put home 3:19 after the conclusion of regulation time. Junior Karleigh Murphey did the honors when she headed in a corner kick served up by senior Emily Mullady.

The game was surprisingly close when one considers the fact that the Jackets held a 25-to-seven advantage in total shots. The Jackets also attempted 11 corner kicks, while the opposition recorded just one try from the corner.

Waynesburg will look to carry its offensive momentum into Friday's season finale against Saint Vincent College. The contest, which will serve as the team's senior night, is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
