Women's soccer battles to draw with W&J

Hotek scores twice in come-from-behind 3-3 draw

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 26) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team battled back from an early deficit to pull out a 3-3 double-overtime tie with Washington & Jefferson on Saturday. Along with providing plenty of drama, Saturday's game at John F. Wiley Stadium also served as the team's annual Kick Pancreatic Cancer game, which raises money and awareness for the devastating disease.

The Presidents (7-7-2, 3-3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 28:52 of action and looked poised for a big road win. The Yellow Jackets (6-8-3, 2-4-1) slowed their opponents' momentum with a score from freshman Melanie Burchfield in the 33rd minute of action that trimmed W&J's lead in half at 2-1.

The visiting team rebuilt a two-goal advantage with a tally just before halftime. However, Waynesburg played an outstanding second half to tie the score and send the contest to overtime. Senior Becky Hotek led the charge with a pair of scores that were separated by just 12:27. Her first goal came at the 64:20 mark after the W&J keeper fumbled the ball, allowing Hotek to drive the point home. Junior Karleigh Murphey assisted on what wound up being the game's final goal, which was scored in the 76th minute of action.

Waynesburg put a pair of shots on goal in the first overtime period, but were unable to strike pay dirt. The Yellow Jackets out-shot the opposition by an 18-to-nine margin over 110 minutes of play. The home team also attempted eight corner kicks, while W&J was not awarded a single attempt. Junior goalkeeper Ciara Scott got the start and made three saves.

The Jackets, who are still alive for one of four spots in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs, face a crucial conference road match at Geneva on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
