WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team tipped off the 2014-15 campaign on Saturday by welcoming a strong Carnegie Mellon University team to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets trailed by just six at halftime, but the Tartans pulled away over the final 20 minutes for an 80-67 victory.
CMU (1-0) jumped out to an 8-1 lead over the first 2:08 of action and grew that advantage to 24-9 with just under 12 minutes to play before halftime. The Tartans maintained double-digit advantages throughout most of the first half, but a 7-0 Yellow Jacket (0-1) run over 2:20 near the end of the opening period shrunk the visiting team's advantage to just five points with 43 seconds showing on the scoreboard. Sophomore
Katie Gehlmann contributed five of those points on a three-pointer and a layup that came in back-to-back possessions.
CMU drilled a free throw to end the first-half scoring and take a 29-23 advantage into the locker room.
Unfortunately, The Tartans used a 9-0 run to open the second half to grow its lead to 15 points at 38-23. The Tartans never trailed by less than 10 points over the remainder of the contest, as they scored the season-opening win.
Though it came in a losing effort, junior forward
Heather Davis got her season off to a fast start by pouring in a team-high 21 points on an efficient eight-for-15 shooting effort. She was particularly good behind the three-point arc, where she connected on five-of-nine treys.
Gehlmann and sophomore
Haley Delaney contributed 10 and 13 points, respectively, off the bench, while freshman forward
Addy Knetzer yanked down a team-best six rebounds.
Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 18, when the Jackets travel to Pitt Greensburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
