GREENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2014-15 season on Tuesday night when it made a road trip to Pitt Greensburg. The Yellow Jackets built a slim halftime advantage and built upon it before the game ended in a 72-62 Jacket victory.
Freshman forward
Addy Knetzer got a big night started by completing an old fashioned three-point play for the Jackets (1-1) to put her team ahead 3-0. The two opponentss battled back-and-forth through the first 11 minutes of action with neither taking firm control of the contest. However, with 9:06 remaining on the clock, Waynesburg took off on an 8-0 run that turned a two-point deficit into 23-17 lead. A pair of free throws from junior forward
Maura Bobby capped the surge with just over five minutes to play until halftime.
By the time the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms, Waynesburg held a 28-23 advantage over the host Bobcats (1-1).
UPG opened up the second half by going on an 18-to-six run that spanned 7:11 and put the host team in the driver's seat with a 41-34 lead. The Yellow Jackets showed their resolve by responding with a 14-3 surge of their own to wrestle the advantage back at 47-44 with 8:18 left to play in the contest.
The two squads continued to trade baskets, as well as the lead, over the next four minutes with neither squad regaining a solid grip on the contest. But, with 4:08 to play in regulation and the Bobcats holding a slim 54-52 edge, the Jackets were finally able to close out their first win of the season.
Sophomore
Haley Delaney's three-pointer with four minutes showing on the clock not only put the Orange and Black ahead 55-54, but it marked the beginning of a game-deciding 11-0 Waynesburg surge that included six points from Bobby. By the time UPG was finally able to stop the run, the Yellow Jackets were on top 63-54.
The visitors were able to grow their lead to as many as 12 points (72-60), before wrapping up the win.
As previously mentioned, Knetzer made her presence known in a big way during her first collegiate road game. She led the victors in both points (17) and rebounds (eight) over 22 minutes of work. She shot a solid 60 percent (six-of-10) from the floor and knocked down all five of her free throw attempts.
Bobby led a Waynesburg bench effort that contributed 38 points to the victory by going for 16 on five-for-10 shooting from the field. Sophomore
Katie Gehlmann completed a trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points.
The Jackets overcame a 46-34 rebounding deficit to pick up the win.
Waynesburg is back in action on Monday, Nov. 24, when it hosts Franciscan. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
