WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 24) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team opened up a slim halftime lead against Franciscan University on Monday night, but used a big run at the beginning of the first half to a put together a 75-64 win over the Barons.
Franciscan (0-3) scored the game's opening basket on its first shot of the contest, but Waynesburg (2-1) fired back with a 10-2 run that gave the Jackets a 10-4 lead 3:41 seconds into the contest. The host team eventually built up a 17-7 advantage in the first half, but the Barons used 15 made free throws in 18 attempts to trim Waynesburg's advantage down to just one point (33-32) at halftime.
The Orange and Black used a period-opening 8-2 run to move ahead 41-34 3:30 into the second half. Waynesburg kept the pressure on the Franciscan defense and saw its lead expand to 52-36 with 14:00 left to play.
Waynesburg's advantage swelled to as many as 19 points and slipped below double digits just once before the game came to an end. The victory was the Jackets' second in a row.
The victors were led by senior guard
Rebecca Kerr, who scored a career-high 19 points and added seven rebounds to a very productive night. Freshman
Addy Knetzer added 10 points and a squad-high eight rebounds in the victory. Junior forward
Maura Bobby chipped in 13 points off the bench. Junior point guard
Lauren Blair did a great job spreading the basketball around, as she racked up a game-high 11 assists.
Waynesburg shot well from the field, hitting on 44 percent of its tries from the floor while holding Franciscan to just 29.9 percent on the night.
The Jackets get back to action on Wednesday, Nov. 26, when they make a road trip to Baldwin Wallace University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
