GROVE CITY, Pa. (Nov. 4) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team took part in a thrilling first-round Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoff game on Tuesday afternoon at Grove City. The Yellow Jackets and Wolverines went into double-overtime before the host team advanced to the championship finals with a 2-1 win.
Second-seeded GCC (12-6-1) controlled the first half of the contest by out-shooting the third-seeded Yellow Jackets (9-7-4) 13-to-three over the first 45 minutes and took a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 6:11 mark of the contest. Things turned around for Waynesburg in the second period, during which the Yellow Jackets fired off 19 total shots to the Wolverines' nine attempts. The Jackets' biggest shot of half came in the 79
th minute when senior
Ray Melone tied the game up off a corner kick.
The score remained 1-1 throughout the remainder of regulation time and through the first 10-minute overtime period, during which each team put two shots on net. The game was decided just before the start of the 103
rd minute when the Wolverines managed to slip one last score past Waynesburg keeper
Brandon Daughtry.
Though the final play of the game featured Daughtry giving up the game-winning goal, his overall performance was integral in the Yellow Jackets having any shot at victory. The senior standout piled up 13 saves on the day, while facing a whopping 32 total shots.
While Grove City advances to Saturday's championship game against top-seeded Thomas More in the PAC title game, Waynesburg will await word on a potential Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoff berth.
