Lady Jackets end 2014 in style

Kerr pours in game-high 26 points during victory over La Roche

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 23) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team emphatically snapped out of a five-game losing streak on Tuesday, Dec. 23, when La Roche College came to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets ended the Redhawks' six-game winning streak with a 77-66 victory to end the 2014 calendar year.

The Jackets (3-6) jumped out to a 4-0 lead on back-to-back layups by junior Maura Bobby. La Roche (7-4) fired back by out-scoring the host team 18-to-nine over the next seven-plus minutes to go up 18-13, before the host team fired back with a 7-1 surge that gave the Jackets the lead back at 20-19 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.

Waynesburg continued to lead for most of the remainder of the opening period. After the Redhawks regained a slim one-point advantage (29-28) with 5:27 showing on the first-half clock, a jumper from sophomore Haley Delaney moved the Jackets ahead 30-29. The home team never trailed from that point on, and built up leads as large as six points, before taking a 43-39 advantage into halftime.

The Orange and Black came firing out of the break and scored the first six points of the period to move ahead 49-39. La Roche slowed the Jackets' momentum with a pair of free throws, but Waynesburg didn't slow down for long, and posted back-to-back hoops to build a 53-41 advantage.

The Hawks were able to trim their deficit down to just five points a few minutes later, but the Jackets wouldn't go away. Waynesburg maintained its solid play and was never truly threatened over the remainder of the afternoon.

After missing Waynesburg's last game to fulfill her academic requirements, senior guard Rebecca Kerr posted a personal collegiate-best and game-high 26 points on nine-of-16 shooting. Senior guard Hayden Giuliani chipped in eight points and a game-high six assists. Freshman forward Addy Knetzer grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and chipped in six points, all in the second half.

The Jackets won't return to competition until Saturday, Jan. 3, when they get back to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition with a road game at Washington & Jefferson. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
