PHILIPPI, W.Va. (Dec. 8) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to the state of West Virginia on Monday night to take on Division II Alderson Broaddus University. The Yellow Jackets dropped an 81-63 contest to the Battlers.
The Yellow Jackets (2-6) knew they had an uphill battle ahead of them before even stepping on the court, as they were playing without number-two scorer
Rebecca Kerr and starting point guard
Lauren Blair, as well as senior reserve forward
Rachel Lovely. Despite the lack of personnel, Waynesburg trailed by just five points (45-40) at halftime.
The Jackets cut the deficit down to three points (45-42) thanks to a layup by freshman forward
Addy Knetzer. Unfortunately, that's as close as Waynesburg came to completing the comeback, as A-B (2-5) responded with the next two hoops to go ahead 50-42 early in the period.
The Battlers went on to build leads as large as 24 points before the game concluded. A 31 percent shooting performance from the floor hurt the visiting team's chances for victory. A-B also held a 48-to-35 advantage in total rebounds.
Junior
Maura Bobby took advantage of getting the start by pouring in a team-high 20 points and tying for the Jacket lead with eight rebounds and three assists. Senior guard
Hayden Giuliani chipped in 16 points and three assists, while sophomore guard
Katie Gehlmann, who was also making a spot start, added 11 points. She also swiped away a team-best three steals.
Waynesburg won't be back in action until Tuesday, Dec. 23, when the Jackets host La Roche College. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
