WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 15) – Four players scored in double figures as the Waynesburg University men's basketball team pushed its season-high winning streak to four games after earning a 72-57 victory against Westminster on Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. The four-game winning streak is the longest for the Orange and Black since the 2006-2007 season and helped the team clinch at least a .500 record in conference play for the first time in eight years.
The Yellow Jackets (13-11, 8-7) and Titans (3-20, 2-12) battled back-and-forth for the majority of the first half of play. The Titans built up a 29-20 following 13:15 of play. Waynesburg responded with a 20-to-six run to build up a 40-35 halftime advantage. That productive stretch included points by six different Yellow Jackets.
Waynesburg pushed its lead to double digits (45-35) at the 16:26 mark after two free throws from junior guard
Byrum Louco. Westminster cut the deficit to just four points (53-49) after a three-pointer with 10:47 to play, but that was as close as the visitors came to pulling out a win. A three-pointer by Louco pushed the lead back to double digits at 61-51 with 6:42 to play.
Westminster trimmed its deficit down to 66-57 with 3:57 to play, but Waynesburg put the game away by holding the Titans scoreless over the remainder of the contest. The Jackets closed the scoring by posting the game's final six points.
Junior forward
Jacob Fleegle led the way for the victors by posting team highs in points (13), rebounds (seven) and blocks (three). Guard
E.J. Coleman added 12 points after being honored as the Jackets' lone senior prior to tipoff. Louco and freshman guard
Christian Koroly added 10 and 12 points, respectively.
Waynesburg connected on 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) three-point shots in the win, which moved the Orange Black a half-game ahead of Washington & Jefferson for fourth place in the PAC standings.
The Jackets close out the regular season by hosting first-place Saint Vincent on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
