Waynesburg baseball continues run at RussMatt Invitational

Yellow Jackets get swept by Albion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 13) – The Waynesburg University baseball team dropped two contests to Albion College Thursday afternoon as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Albion earned the game-one victory 28-10 before taking game two 3-0.

While the final score certainly wasn't to its liking, the opener got off to a fine start for Waynesburg, as it scored the first six runs of the game. The first run for the Yellow Jackets (2-8) came off an errant Albion throw that allowed junior centerfielder Eric Crum to score the first fun of the day.

The Jackets added to their lead by posting five more runs in the second inning. Sophomore Matt Bensinger started the scoring with an RBI single to make it 2-0 Waynesburg. Senior designated hitter Clay Roman tacked on an RBI the yard way by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score freshman shortstop Nathan Mori. The big inning continued when freshman first baseman Jonathan Kletzli drove home two more with a two-out single. Junior Ben Shorthouse added an RBI infield single to push the margin to 6-0.

Albion (4-3) answered right back, taking advantage of two Jacket errors and two hit batters as they scored eight runs in the bottom of the second to take an 8-6 lead, but the Jackets were ready with an answer. The Orange and Black put two runners on to lead off the third inning before Bensinger drove home Mori to cut the deficit to 8-7. Roman knocked a single up the middle to score senior catcher Marc Timmons and tie the game at 8-8. Kletzli then brought home Bensinger when an Albion outfielder dropped the potential third out. That score made it 9-8 Waynesburg after the top of the third inning.

Unfortunately, that proved to be Waynesburg's final lead of the twin-bill, as the Britons exploded for nine more in the third to go ahead 17-9. The score remained that way until Roman scored junior Jordan Truscott on an RBI groundout to pull the Jackets to within seven runs (17-10) of the eventual victors. Albion added 11 more runs to more than seal up the victory.

Crum, Bensinger and Kletzli each recorded multi-hit performances in game one. Freshman reliever Jacob Meyer took the loss on the mound. The two teams combined for 38 runs, 27 hits, and 11 errors.

After a wild opener, game two was a more pleasing display for baseball purists. Waynesburg sophomore pitcher Brian Resnik put together a respectable outing on the hill and allowed three runs, all of which came in the sixth inning, over a complete-game effort. The second-year starter struck out two batters with no walks.

Crum continued his torrid hitting day with a team-best three hits in game two. Kletzli and Roman collected two hits each in the finale.

The Jackets wrap up their stay in Florida tomorrow when they face New Jersey City for a single nine-inning contest. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
