WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 18) – The Waynesburg University baseball team opened the home portion of its 2014 schedule when it hosted Pitt Greensburg on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets rallied back from a 4-0 first-inning deficit before dropping the opener 5-3, but bounced back to win a thrilling 6-5 extra-inning affair in game two.
The Bobcats (5-6) jumped on Waynesburg (4-9) sophomore starting pitcher
Brian Resnik for four runs in the top of the first to grab the early lead. The Jackets rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, the first of which came off an RBI fielder's choice from freshman catcher
Josh Hausler that scored freshman shortstop
Nathan Mori. Waynesburg pieced together its second tally of the day when junior outfielder
Eric Crum drove in freshman designated hitter
Jason Poland with an RBI groundout.
Pitt Greensburg tacked on a run in the top of the fourth to build a 5-2 advantage, before Waynesburg mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior
Ben Shorthouse led off the frame with a double into centerfield and was moved to third base on a ground ball out by junior second baseman
Neal Yakopin. Freshman first baseman
Jonathon Kletzli plated Shorthouse with a sacrifice fly out to bring about the eventual final score of 5-3, before UPG recorded the game's final out to halt the rally.
Sophomore
Brian Resnik suffered the loss on the mound, despite a respectable complete-game effort. The righty allowed just three earned runs over seven innings on seven hits and two walks. Resnik picked up three strikeouts during his third start of the year.
Like they did in game one, the Bobcats scored first in the late contest, this time plating a run in the top of the second frame. Waynesburg didn't wait long to answer, as Kletzli drove in his second of the day with a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Crum to cross home plate and tie things up at 1-1.
Greensburg regained the advantage with a two-spot in the top half of the fourth, but the home team responded with its biggest inning of the doubleheader. Junior third baseman
Jordan Truscott picked up an RBI when he singled in Mori to cut the Bobcat advantage to 3-2. After senior catcher
Marc Timmons singled and Yakopin bunted the two runners into scoring position, Crum lashed a double that scored two more runs and gave the Jackets their first lead of the afternoon at 4-3.
Momentum swung back to the visitors, who tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth and retook the lead at 5-4 on a throwing error in the top of the seventh. Waynesburg refused to give up the sweep, however, as freshman
Jason Poland connected on a one-out sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame that allowed sophomore
Matt Bensinger to produce the game-tying run and send the contest to extra innings.
After holding the opposition to a meaningless single in the top of the eighth, Truscott led off the Jacket half of the frame with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved Hausler, who pinch-ran for Truscott, into scoring position. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the host squad, which then picked up the winning run courtesy of Hausler when Greensburg was unable to turn a double play.
Freshman Waynesburg native
Colton Lippencott picked up the win on the mound after tossing two innings of relief. He gave up one unearned run on two hits and no walks. Carter got the start and gave up four runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits and no walks. The freshman also piled up six strikeouts in the no-decision.
Crum, Bensinger, Truscott and Timmons smacked two hits each to make up the bulk of Waynesburg's nine hits in the victory. Crum added a game-high two RBI and a walk to a productive day at the dish.
The Jackets are next scheduled to be in action on Saturday, March 22, when they host Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
