WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 22) – The Waynesburg University baseball team dropped a pair of contests to Penn State Behrend on Saturday afternoon. The host Yellow Jackets dropped game one 7-0 before falling 8-2 in game two.

The Lions (8-4) jumped on freshman pitcher Parker Beatty for five runs over the course of the first two innings of the opener. The Lions added two more runs in the top of the third inning to push the margin to 7-0. The Jackets held the Lions off the scoreboard for the remainder of the day, but were unable to cut into the deficit.

Junior outfielder Eric Crum, freshman shortstop Nathan Mori and freshman third baseman Luke Carter each recorded a hit in the opener. Sophomore pitcher Connor Furwa was a bright spot out of the bullpen, as he worked four scoreless innings in which he struck out one batter and walked other.

Behrend's offense put up four runs in the second inning of the late game to provide all the offense it needed for the win. Senior centerfielder Clay Roman reached on a fielder's choice to score junior second baseman Neal Yakopin in the third inning to cut the deficit to 4-1. Unfortunately, the Lions added four more runs over the next three innings to push their lead to 8-1.

Waynesburg added a score in the sixth inning when first baseman Matt Bensinger drove Roman home to close out the scoring.

Roman led the offense in game two with two hits, a run scored and an RBI, while Yakopin strung together three hits in the late contest. Senior pitcher Zach Kreke (0-2) took the loss after starting and working two innings. Kreke surrendered four runs on six hits and two walks.

The Jackets will try to bounce back from the sweep, when they open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against Saint Vincent on Friday, March 28. First pitch of the nine-inning game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
