NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 12) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled north to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania on Monday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with Westminster. The Yellow Jackets rode a balanced offensive attack to a 79-69 win over the host Titans.
Waynesburg (6-7, 3-3), which scored its fourth win over the past five games, got off to a bit of a sluggish start and didn't take its first lead until the 13:14 mark of the first half. A 7-0 run by the Yellow Jackets turned a 22-19 Westminster (1-12, 0-6) lead into a 26-22 Waynesburg advantage.
The Titans regained the lead (27-26) with five unanswered points, before sophomore
Katie Gehlmann knocked down a three-pointer with 4:20 showing on the first-half clock. That trey started an 11-0 surge by the Jackets that concluded with a buzzer-beating layup from freshman forward
Addy Knetzer. By the time the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms, Waynesburg led 37-27.
Westminster clawed back into the game by scoring the first five points of the second half and cutting the Jacket advantage to 37-32 following two minutes of action. The home team kept the pressure on its conference rival and trailed by just two points (39-37) with 15:29 showing on the scoreboard.
Waynesburg maintained its composure during the Titan run and eventually rebuilt multiple double-digit leads as the game wore on. The Jackets moved ahead by as many as 17 points (70-53) with just over five minutes to play, but the contest was far from decided, despite the large late lead. The Yellow Jackets saw their advantage shrink to nine points (76-67), but with just 28 seconds left to play, Waynesburg was able to secure the victory.
Senior guard
Rebecca Kerr continued to enjoy a solid final season with the Jackets by pouring in a team-high 21 points on nine-of-17 shooting. She also pulled down seven rebounds.
Kerr led a quartet of double-digit scorers for Waynesburg, which included sophomore guard
Kassidy O'Keefe, who racked up 15 points, which is her best offensive showing since transferring to Waynesburg following the fall semester. Knetzer notched her second-straight double-double on 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Gehlmann chipped in 10 points.
The Jackets will go for a third-straight victory on Wednesday, Jan. 14, when they welcome Thiel to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
