Men's hoopsters score PAC win

Waynesburg defeats Westminster 70-63

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 12) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team overcame some early shooting woes to earn a 70-63 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over Westminster on Monday. The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-2 in PAC play thanks to their second-straight victory.

Despite shooting below 30 percent in the first half, Waynesburg (8-7, 4-2) managed to grab a 27-26 halftime lead over the Titans (3-11, 0-5). Senior wing Kenny Klase dropped in a basket and a pair of free throws to open the second half and increase his team's lead to 31-26. Westminster responded by posting the next five points and tying the contest at 31-31 with 16:53 left in regulation.

The score remained tight over the next nine minutes of play. However, the Jackets used a 10-2 run that turned a slim 49-47 edge into a 59-49 advantage for the visitors. It was the largest lead of the game for either squad. Westminster managed to pull to within four points (59-55) with 2:46 showing on the scoreboard, but 11 successful free throw tries in 12 attempts during the final seconds of the night pushed Waynesburg to the seven-point win.

The Jackets were led by seniors Jacob Fleegle and Jason Propst, who tied for the team lead in scoring with 15 points each. Klase and junior guard B.J. Durham completed a quartet of double-digit Waynesburg scorers.

The Orange and Black committed just eight total turnovers and forced Westminster into coughing the ball up 17 times. Waynesburg also enjoyed a sizeable advantage at the free throw line, where it connected on 20-of-26 attempts. Westminster made just 10-of-15 tries from the stripe.

Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 14, when it plays host to Thiel. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
