Jackets tangle with Chatham

Waynesburg suffers 64-59 loss to Cougars

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Jan. 17) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Chatham for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with the Cougars on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with a 64-59 road loss.

Waynesburg (7-8, 4-4) senior guard Rebecca Kerr opened the scoring with the game's first basket on the opening shot of the contest. A free throw from sophomore Haley Delaney gave the Jackets a 3-0 advantage after 1:13 of action.

Chatham (5-10, 2-6) followed with a pair of free throws to trim the early deficit down to 3-2. The Orange and Black fired back with a 13-3 surge that gave the visiting team a sizeable early advantage at 16-5. However, the rest of the first period belonged to the Cougars, whose defense allowed them to shut down the Waynesburg offense. The host team also scored the final nine points of the half, while shutting Waynesburg out over the last 5:14 in the period.

Back-to-back baskets by Delaney and junior guard Lauren Blair, respectively, to open the second period gave the Jackets the lead back at 29-28. The two teams traded baskets and leads over the next six-plus minutes.

With 13:50 left to play, the score was tied 36-36. Waynesburg appeared to take control of the contest yet again, thanks to a 9-2 span that was capped by a Kerr jumper. The Jackets stayed ahead of the Cougars until the 12:47 mark of the half, when the home team converted a turnover into a layup that put it back ahead at 49-48.

Momentum swung back to Waynesburg, which moved back ahead 53-52 on a jumper by freshman forward Addy Knetzer. The back-and-forth affair continued into the final seconds of the game, when the score was tied 59-59 with 1:27 showing on the clock.

Unfortunately for the Orange and Black, its offense went ice cold over the closing moments of the contest. Chatham, meanwhile, was unable to even attempt a field goal over that stretch. However, the host team connected on five-of-seven attempts from the foul line to seal the victory.

Kerr and Blair led the offensive charge for Waynesburg with 12 and nine points, respectively. Delaney yanked down a team-high nine rebounds.

The game was ultimately won at the free throw line, where Chatham hit on 22-of-36 attempts. Waynesburg countered with a 12-for-21 performance. Both teams shot below 32 percent from the floor on the night.

The Jackets will try to bounce back from the disappointing loss on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Geneva. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
