GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 17) – It was another busy Saturday for the Waynesburg University wrestling team, which traveled to the East/West Duals. The number-23 Yellow Jackets went 2-1 on the day, defeating number-26 Heidelberg and Elizabethtown and losing to number-eight Messiah, which hosted the event.

The Yellow Jackets (14-6) were led by the senior duo of Luke Lohr and Sam Guidi, who both went 3-0 on the day. Junior Gordan Bieber (125), sophomore Filippo Crivelli (133), senior Gennaro Bonaventura (197) and junior Greg Kumer (285) added two individual victories each on the day.

#23 Waynesburg 24, #26 Heidelberg 18
The Yellow Jackets got their day started by picking up their sixth win over a team ranked in the NWCA national top 30 poll. Waynesburg benefited from a pair of Heidelberg (8-9) forfeits, which came at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively. The Student Princes won the first contested bout of the day by way of a decision at 133 pounds.

The Yellow Jackets led 12-3 heading into the 149-pound bout, where Lohr started his perfect day with an 8-5 decision victory. Heidelberg removed half of its 12-point deficit with a pin at 157 pounds, but Guidi answered quickly with a hard-fought 3-1 decision at 165 pounds.

Sophomore Ryan Shank expanded the Jacket advantage to 21-9 with a 4-3 victory at 174 pounds. The Princes notched their second pin of the match at 184 pounds to stay alive going into 197 pounds. Luckily for Waynesburg, Bonaventura was up to the challenge and pulled out a match-clinching 4-3 decision to seal the victory.

Heidelberg closed the contest with a victory at heavyweight, but Kumer made Nino Majoy, the number-three heavyweight in the country, work for the 5-2 decision. Waynesburg's starting big man has faced three of the top four 285-pounders in the country over the past three weekends.

#8 Messiah 30, #23 Waynesburg 13
Waynesburg faced a stiff test in the host Falcons (16-1), who opened the match with a major decision win at 125 pounds. Crivelli got the Jackets on the board with a wild 15-10 victory at 133 pounds to make the score 4-3 Messiah.

Freshman D.J. Grindle wrestled a solid first period against returning national champion Kaleb Loht and trailed by just one point (4-3) in the second. Unfortunately, Loht caught the Waynesburg rookie for a fall that put the Falcons up 10-3.

Lohr kept his team in the match with a 14-3 major decision at 149 pounds to trim the deficit down to 10-7. Messiah notched bonus points in a third-straight victory with a major decision at 157 pounds, before Guidi scored a 6-2 decision at 165 pounds.

The Falcons sealed the victory with pins at 174 and 197 pounds that were sandwiched around a major decision at 184. Despite a loss on the scoreboard, Kumer was able to end the contest on a high note for Waynesburg, thanks to a 7-5 decision win.

#23 Waynesburg 35, Elizabethtown 11
The Jackets came racing out of the gates in their final contest of the day and never looked back en route to a 24-point win over the Blue Jays (3-11).

Bieber just managed to complete a pin in 6:49 at 125 pounds, before Crivelli recorded a first-period fall in 2:15 at 133 pounds. After Elizabethtown picked up its first victory of the contest at 141, Lohr completed another flawless Saturday with a 17-6 major decision at 149 pounds.

Freshman Derek Hull pulled out a 3-2 decision at 157 pounds to give the Jackets a 19-3 advantage. Guidi expanded the lead to 25-3 with his first pin of event. The Jays notched back-to-back victories at 174 and 184 pounds, before Bonaventura and Kumer closed things out with wins by injury default and major decision, respectively.

Waynesburg opens up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition on Wednesday, Jan. 21, with a dual match against Washington & Jefferson. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
