Women's basketball downs W&J

Yellow defeat Presidents 79-74

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Jan.3) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team started off 2015 in dramatic fashion. The Yellow Jackets overcame a 20-point deficit on Saturday, Jan. 3, to defeat rival Washington & Jefferson College 79-74.

The Jackets (4-6, 1-2) scored the first basket of the game on a layup by junior Maura Bobby. The Presidents (9-2, 3-1) immediately answered with one of their five three-pointers made in the first half. The Jackets took back the lead at 6-5 thanks to another Bobby layup.

W&J proceeded to go on a 35-13 run in which it shot 70 percent (14-20) from the field to jump out to a 20-point lead at 39-19 with 6:04 left in the half. The Jackets responded with a 13-2 run of their own to pull to within 10 points at 43-33. The Presidents eventually went into the locker room with a 48-35 advantage

The Jackets came out firing in period number two thanks to a pair of three-pointers by junior Heather Davis and a layup by junior Lauren Blair, to pull within five points of the lead (50-45) with 16:37 left in the second half. The Orange and Black traded baskets with the Presidents before going on a 15-2 run to take a 68-60 lead with 7:46 left in the second half. The Jackets never trailed over the remainder of the evening.

Waynesburg's comeback hinged largely on shooting 60 percent from the field during the second half. Davis went three-of-six from long distance over the final 20 minutes of action and five-of-10 for the entire contest. She scored a team high 17 points and chipped in seven boards. Bobby notched a double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds. Seniors Rebecca Kerr and Hayden Giuliani chipped in seven and 15 points, respectively. Blair led all players with nine assists.

The Jackets next take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 5:30 p.m.
