Men's soccer blanks Thiel

Five different Jackets score in 5-0 victory

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 10) – The members of the Waynesburg University men's soccer team will certainly be able to enjoy the school's fall break, which began this weekend. The Yellow Jackets put together their best performance on the pitch Saturday, as they secured their first win of the season by shutting out vising Thiel 5-0 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match.

Five different players scored one goal each for Waynesburg (1-10-1, 1-1-1), including junior Chad Palucka, who tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 24th minute. Sophomore Zach Mitschke doubled his team's advantage roughly 14 minutes later off an assist from freshman James Snyder. Another freshman, Austin Zurik, closed the first-half scoring in the 41st minute.

Senior Victor Browne scored his team-leading third goal in the 49th minute of play off a pass from freshman Caleb Young-Argyle. Junior Josh Hennigh buried the final score of the day after 56:11 of play.

Waynesburg out-shot Thiel (2-10-1, 0-2-1) by a 22-to-eight margin and attempted five corner kicks. The Tomcats did not get the opportunity to put the ball in play from the corner flag. Senior goalkeeper Nathan Ribar recorded his first collegiate complete-game shutout by making five saves in net.

The Jackets will try to carry over the momentum of their first win of the year to Wednesday, Oct. 14, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a  PAC match. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
