PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Oct. 24) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team traveled to Pittsburgh for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at Chatham University. The Yellow Jackets scored in the 81
st minute to win an entertaining back-and-forth contest with the Cougars.
Waynesburg (6-8, 3-4) senior
Karleigh Murphey opened the scoring with a goal in the 20
th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Chatham (8-6, 2-5) came roaring back and found the back of the net twice during the 31
st minute. The game-tying tally was scored at the 31:27 mark, before the go-ahead point was notched just 10 seconds later. By the time the two teams broke for halftime, the Cougars still maintained their 2-1 advantage.
The Jackets continued to trail their hosts until the 61
st minute when freshman
Natalie Fortna headed a feed into the back of the net to knot the score up at 2-2. Fortna also played a role in the eventual game winner when she fed sophomore
Melanie Byler for her team-leading eighth goal of 2015.
Senior goalkeeper
Ciara Scott did just enough to earn the victory in net. She tallied seven saves over 90 minutes of action.
Efficiency was the name of the game for the Waynesburg offense, which produced its three goals on just four shots on net. The Jacket defense also withstood nine Chatham corner kicks.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 28, when they host Grove City for a PAC match. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
