WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 28) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team gave Grove City a battle during Wednesday night's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Yellow Jackets took the Wolverines into double-overtime, but gave up the game-deciding goal at the 106:07 mark of a 3-2 Grove City win.
GCC (10-5-3, 5-1-2), which is in third place in the PAC standings, opened the scoring with a goal during the third minute of action. Waynesburg (6-9, 3-5) rebounded with an equalizer just over five minutes later when sophomore
Sam Nichols tied the game at 1-1 off a free kick.
The Jackets grabbed their first lead of the night when freshman
Natalie Fortna scored her fifth of the season to put the home team up 2-1. Unfortunately, the advantage lasted just 30 seconds, as the Wolverines were able to knot things up at 2-2. Neither team was able to add to their respective scoring total in regulation, and the game moved into extra periods, where the visitors netted the golden goal.
Waynesburg overcame several massive statistical discrepancies to keep the game alive. Grove City held advantages in total shots (28-to-7), shots on goal (15-to-4) and corner kicks (13-to-0). Senior goalkeeper
Ciara Scott helped to overcome the offensive differences by making 12 saves.
The Jackets close up the 2015 season on Saturday, Oct. 31, when they host Westminster for senior day. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
