CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (Dec. 2) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday night with a road trip to Thomas More. The Yellow Jackets showed no fear of the defending national champions and were tied with the Saints after one quarter. Unfortunately, the host team was eventually able to distance itself from the Orange and Black, as it picked up a 93-68 victory.
Waynesburg (1-5, 0-1) held multiple leads in the early portion of the contest, including a 2-0 advantage following the game-opening basket from sophomore forward
Addy Knetzer. Knetzer went on to pour in the Jackets' first seven points of the evening and was a big contributor to a game-opening 12-6 run.
Waynesburg led throughout the entirety of the period, until a pair of Saint (4-0, 1-0) free throws tied things up at 17-17. Unfortunately, those two foul shots were part of a 12-0 surge from the number-one team in the country that turned a 17-11 Jacket lead into a 23-17 deficit early in the second period.
An old-fashion three-point play with 4:18 left to play in the quarter pulled Waynesburg to within three (33-30) of the lead. The Saints reacted by scoring the final 14 points of the half and taking a 47-30 advantage into the locker room.
Back-to-back hoops by the home team stretched its edge to 51-30 early in the third period. Waynesburg fought back with six points of its own on a three-pointer by senior guard
Lauren Blair and a three-point play by senior forward
Maura Bobby, as the Jackets were able to keep the deficit under 20 points until the fourth quarter, when Thomas More pulled away for the victory.
Senior forward
Heather Davis dropped in a team-high 15 points and tied for the game high with five assists. Knetzer chipped in 13 points in the contest, while Blair and junior guard
Katie Gehlmann contributed nine points each in the defeat.
The Jackets return to action on Saturday, Dec. 5, with a PAC road trip to Grove City. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
