PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Dec. 22) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team played one last game before Christmas when it made a road trip to La Roche College on Tuesday. After trailing by just one point at halftime, Waynesburg was unable to hold up against a blistering shooting effort from the host Redhawks, who defeated the Yellow Jackets 76-53.
After giving up the game's opening basket, Waynesburg (3-6) grabbed an early 5-2 lead following a layup from sophomore forward
Addy Knetzer and a three-pointer by senior point guard
Lauren Blair. The two teams stayed within a single basket of each other for the majority of the first half. A layup from senior forward
Maura Bobby gave the Jackets a slim 32-31 edge early in the third quarter.
Unfortunately, that was the final time Waynesburg held a lead over the Hawks (9-2). La Roche, on the other hand, out-scored its opposition 23-9 in the fourth-and-final period to close out the victory. The home team shot 64 percent from the floor over the third and fourth quarters, including a four-for-six effort from three-point range
Gehlmann led the Waynesburg offense with a team-high 14 points on five-of-nine shooting from the floor. She also chipped in defensively with a squad-best four steals.
The Jackets return to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Dec. 30, with a game against Pitt Greensburg. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
