Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. (March 10) – The Waynesburg University baseball team continued its run at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday with a nine-inning game against Westfield State (Mass.). The Yellow Jackets and Owls went back-and-forth over nine innings before the Jackets fell 12-9.
Junior starting pitcher
Connor Furwa got the nod on the bump for the Jackets (2-4) in his first appearance of 2015. Furwa gave up five earned in one-plus inning of work on five hits and one walk. He struck out two during the abbreviated outing.
Waynesburg was led at the plate by senior second baseman
Neal Yakopin, who tallied three runs batted in on a two-for-four day. He also walked once and scored a run. Junior designated hitter
Brent Williams contributed to the team's offensive efforts with two hits before being lifted for a pinch-runner in the seventh.
A bright spot for the Jackets in the loss was the offense's ability to fight back from early deficits as the Owls (5-1) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before the Jackets scored four runs in their half of the fourth inning. Trailing 10-4, the Jackets scored three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to cut the Owls' lead to one at 10-9. Unfortunately, Waynesburg couldn't finish the comeback before falling 12-9.
Waynesburg will look to bounce back tomorrow in a night game against Webster University. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
