TITUSVILLE, Fla. (March 9) – The Waynesburg University softball team opened its 2015 season on Monday at the Cocoa Expo Spring Games. The Yellow Jackets dropped two games to Ave Maria University by the final scores of 12-4 and 11-2.
In the opening contest of the day, Ave Maria jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. Waynesburg benefited from four miscues by the opposition and scored an unearned run in the second inning and three more in the fourth inning.
Cassie Hudson and
Demi Lewin each collected an RBI for the Yellow Jackets in the victory.
Junior
Stephanie Kotomski got the start in the circle and suffered the loss after giving up nine runs, eight of which were earned, over three innings of work. Junior
Cameron Grimes pitched the final inning of the contest.
Ave Maria also raced out to an early lead in the second game, plating runs in each of the first four frames. Both of the Yellow Jackets' runs came with two outs in the fifth inning. With runners on first and second,
Ashley Demarco produced an RBI single to right, her second hit of the game. The next batter,
Cameron Grimes, also produced an RBI single, rounding out the scoring for the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore
Lyndi Gareis got the ball in game two and worked 3.2 innings, while suffering the loss. Junior
Katey Potopenko put together Waynesburg's best showing in the circle on the day by allowing just one hit over 1.1 innings of play.
Waynesburg will continue their Florida trip on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Bloomfield College (N.J.). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
