WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 25) – Several Waynesburg University records were broken during Wednesday night's women's lacrosse match between the Yellow Jackets and visiting Franciscan University. Waynesburg put on quite a show in front of its home crowd on their way to a 23-18 victory.
The 23 goals are the most scored by a Jacket (2-3) team in the seven-plus-year existence of the program, while the 41 combined scores are also tops in Waynesburg history. Two prestigious individual marks were also eclipsed by junior
Makayla Vidosh, whose 10 goals and 11 total points broke Yellow Jacket records in both categories.
Sophomore
Jess Rains opened the offensive explosion with the game's first goal, which came just 32 seconds into the contest. Franciscan (1-4) responded with back-to-back scores to take a 2-1 advantage. Sophomore
Holly Bachman, Vidosh and Rains gave the home team the lead back (4-2) with three unanswered points, but momentum was far from finished from shifting back and forth.
The Barons jumped back ahead with a team hat trick of their own to go ahead 5-4. The two squads alternated in scoring the next four combined goals. With 12:26 remaining in the first half, Franciscan boasted a 7-6 lead. However, Waynesburg was gearing up for a big offensive run that allowed it to take control of the contest.
Bachman got things rolling with a game-tying goal at the 18:14 mark of the contest. That score started a 7-1 surge by the Jackets that ended the first half. Rains scored three times over the run, while Vidosh found the back of the net twice and sophomore
Abbie Miller scored her first goal of the day. By the time the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms, the Orange and Black held a 13-8 advantage.
Vidosh scored the first of her six second-half tallies to put her team ahead 14-8. Waynesburg never trailed from that point forward in the contest. The Barons pulled to within four goals of the lead on multiple occasions, but came no closer to picking up the victory.
The Jackets featured several other impressive individual performances to go along with Vidosh's record-setting showing, which also included a game-high seven groundballs. Rains piled up seven goals and a game-high two assists, while Bachman chipped in a hat trick and an assist for a four-point outing. Senior
JoHanna Phillips picked up the win in goal after making nine saves over 60 minutes of action.
Waynesburg will try to carry over the momentum from its most recent victory into Saturday's Ohio River Lacrosse Conference matchup with Thomas More. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
