WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 29) – One game after posting some of the best offensive numbers in program history, the Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team proved it could win with defense as well. The Yellow Jackets made history on Saturday during their 10-3 victory over visiting Thomas More College.
Waynesburg (3-3, 1-2) won its first Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) match in since the league was formed prior to this season. The Saints' (0-4, 0-3) three goals are the fewest ever given up by a Jacket team in the program's eight-year history. The 13 combined points make up the smallest scoring total in a game in school history, as well. Finally, the Orange and Black's third victory ties last year's team for the most wins in program history.
The Jackets allowed just one goal in the first half, while firing in five of its own. Sophomore
Holly Bachman got the ball rolling for the home team with a tally 2:23 into the contest. Bachman followed up the tally by assisting on a score by senior
Kelly Mehal that made the score 2-0.
Junior
Makayla Vidosh kept Waynesburg's game-opening run alive by splitting the pipes with 24:02 left to play in the first half. Bachman made it 4-0 with her second of the afternoon just before the 10-minute mark of the contest. Thomas More snapped the Jackets' offensive surge to trim its deficit down to 4-1.
Both teams were held scoreless for over 15 minutes, before Bachman notched goal number three on the day to send Waynesburg into halftime with a 5-1 lead. Bachman carried her momentum into period number two by scoring the first goal after the break. The sophomore's final score of the day put the Jackets comfortably ahead 6-1 with 27:55 showing on the scoreboard.
Thomas More scored its second goal of the game to make the score 6-2, but Waynesburg snuffed out any potential comeback try by firing in the next three points of the day. Vidosh, junior
Lauren Blair and sophomore
Jess Rains did the damage for the Orange and Black. After the Saints closed out their scoring efforts to make the score 9-3, Rains wrapped up the game's offensive production with her second tally of the victory.
Senior goalkeeper
JoHanna Phillips got the start in net and stopped six-of-nine shots on goal to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Waynesburg will go for a program-record third-straight win on Monday, March 30, when it hosts Lancaster Bible College. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
