NEW CONCORD, Ohio (March 4) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team opened 2015 on Wednesday with a road match at Muskingum University. The Yellow Jackets got their season off to a positive start with a 14-11 win over the Muskies.
The Jackets (1-0) fell behind 8-4 at halftime, despite a pair of first-half goals from sophomore
Jess Rains, including the first tally of the game and Waynesburg's first score of the season. Sophomore
Holly Bachman and senior
Kelly Mehal also found the back of the net in the opening half, but a 5-0 run allowed Muskingum (0-1) to go to the break with a four-goal lead.
The Muskies' lead grew to 10-5 early in period number two, but the Jackets responded to the challenge in a big way with nine unanswered goals. Bachman, Mehal, sophomore
Brandi Rohal, junior Mikayla Vidosh and senior
Nadine Leishman all scored during the game-deciding run.
By the time the Jacket surge had ended, the Orange and Black held a 14-10 lead. Muskingum picked up its final goal of the day with 2:20 left to play, but Waynesburg halted the Muskies' comeback try at that point and held on for the victory.
Rains led the Waynesburg attack with a team-high four goals. Vidosh added a hat trick to the 14-point output, while Mehal and Bachman split the pipes two times each. In all, seven different Yellow Jackets scored in the win, which spoiled Muskingum's first-ever varsity contest.
Junior goalkeeper
JoHanna Phillips picked up the victory in the net after stopping 17-of-28 shots on goal. Waynesburg pulled out the win despite putting just 17 shots on net.
The Jackets are back in action on Friday, March 20, when they travel to The College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio. The matchup will be Waynesburg's first-ever in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference, which was formed this past offseason. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
