GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 17) – The Waynesburg University softball team completed the non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) portion of its 2015 schedule on Friday with a road trip to Pitt Greensburg. The Yellow Jackets fell to the Bobcats by the final scores of 4-2 and 6-2.
UPG (12-13) never trailed in the opener, striking for one run in the second inning and two runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Waynesburg (9-23) managed to trim into the deficit in the top of the fourth, when sophomore pitcher
Lyndi Gareis registered the Yellow Jackets' lone RBI of the game. With one out, Gareis' groundout scored junior
Katey Potopenko.
Unfortunately, Waynesburg managed just one more tally for the remainder of the game, which was an unearned run in the sixth inning scored by senior first baseman
Haley Payne.
Gareis took the loss for Waynesburg in the circle after allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and striking out a pair.
In game two, Waynesburg scored both of its runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore leftfielder
Demi Lewin led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on a groundout by junior shortstop
Jessica Dorazio. Consecutive passed balls allowed Lewin to score the game's first run. A walk to sophomore second baseman
Ashley Demarco combined with Payne being hit by a pitch gave Waynesburg runners on first and second with one out. Potopenko followed by knocking an RBI double to left-centerfield that scored Demarco and gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.
Pitt-Greensburg responded with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to knot the contest at 2-2. The following frame, the Bobcats broke the game open by scoring four times en route to the win.
Junior pitcher
Stephanie Kotomski posted her fourth complete game of the season in the loss.
Waynesburg will return to action on Saturday, April 18, with a doubleheader at PAC rival Saint Vincent. First pitch from Latrobe is scheduled for 1 p.m.
